Background of the study
Women have historically played a pivotal role in environmental conservation, often serving as custodians of natural resources in many Nigerian communities. In Esan Central Local Government Area, women are increasingly involved in conservation activities, from community mobilization to sustainable agricultural practices (Ede, 2023). Their active participation has been linked to improved environmental outcomes and increased community resilience. Recent research highlights that the inclusion of women in decision-making processes not only enhances conservation efforts but also contributes to social equity (Igbinedion, 2024). Women’s unique perspectives and indigenous knowledge are instrumental in promoting sustainable practices that preserve biodiversity and mitigate environmental degradation. Despite these contributions, women’s roles in environmental management are often under-recognized and undervalued, leading to limited support and resources. This study examines the extent of women’s involvement in environmental conservation in Esan Central, exploring the challenges they face and the impact of their efforts. It also seeks to identify opportunities to further empower women in environmental governance, ensuring their contributions are effectively integrated into broader conservation strategies (Uwa, 2025).
Statement of the problem
Women in Esan Central are actively involved in environmental conservation; however, their roles are frequently marginalized in decision-making processes. The lack of formal recognition and adequate support limits the effectiveness of their contributions, thereby hindering the progress of sustainable environmental management in the area. Addressing this gender gap is crucial for harnessing the full potential of community-driven conservation initiatives (Osagie, 2024).
